It’s fucking delicioso. That’s really all you need to know. That, and it’s important that you order the Tacos Locos… a perfectly seasonsed mixture of chorizo, chicken, and pork topped with chopped onions, lettuce and tomatoes. It’s a bit spicy, but if you’re not a wussy gringo, try the pickled chilies and carrots on top- a unique condiment that you won’t find at the other 8 Mexican restaurants in Charlottesville.
You’ll be pleased to know that the tortillas are made fresh each day, if not to order. The owner says the best time to come is right after they open in the morning, because the tortillas are hot off the press- literally. There is a giant tortilla press behind the counter that was moved in recently to accommadate the growth of business that Michoacana has had in the last year… The owner’s wife used to hand-make the tortillas herself, but now that the place has such a following, they have expanded a bit. That’s good news for you, because they also added a few more tables. But don’t be a annoyed if there isn’t anywhere for you to sit- many times you’ll have to find a corner to stand in until something opens up.
Aside from the crazy tacos, you owe it to yourself to get a tamale. They’re filled with succulent pork and steamed in a corn husk. The gorditas are interesting… they’re big and simialar to a tamale, but crispy on the outside and filled with beef or beans and topped with lettuce, cheese, onions, sour cream and other goodies. There are other items on the menu, nachos, enchiladas, burritos, etc… but we really cannot say it enough- just order the damn Tacos Locos.
You’ll spend just under $10 on a few tacos and a drink (try the horchata). Don’t look like a fool and flash your debit card- La Michoacana only takes cash. It’s located on High Street, just up the way from Jak ‘n Jil, and across from the Joy gas station.
